The Haunting(1963)

This film was made in 1963  and was directed and produced by Robert Wise at the MGM British film studio in the United Kingdom and was shot on a budget of US$1.05 Million. The ground shots and exterior’s were shot at Ettington Park in the village of Ettington in Warwickshire.

The film starred Julie Harris,Claire Bloom,Richard Johnson, and Russ Tamblyn.

Upon release on the 18 of September the film did moderately well and some criticized the film for being incoherent. But today it has reached cult status and is said to be one of the Best Horror Films in Cinematic History.

Dr John Markway a Paranormal Investigator  brings together a group of people with Paranormal gifts to Investigate Hill House .The family that  lived there through the years have all died mysteriously and the House is now reported to be Haunted.

The film is very foreboding from the start and deliver’s a vise like grip of fear as you wonder whats going to happen next. The film was shot in black and white and adds to the atmospheric quality of the film.

I remember watching this movie when I was 16 and the film has never left me. And every time i watch it there’s still a little bit of fear that creeps in.

  1. Definitely a scary film, the scariest ever for many years after. The part where the ghost pushes the door inward certainly got my attention! It was based upon the equally scary book by Shirley Jackson, The Hauntinng of Hill House. I rank it with the other two movies I foun0d truly frightening” Ghost Story (1981 based on the Peter Straub novel of the same name, with Fred Astaire, John Houseman, Melvyn Douglas, etc – and Haunted 1995 with Aidan Quinn and Kate Beckinsale – absolutely terrifying! Based upon a novel of the same name by James Herbert (haven’t read it, understand it’s quite different from the film). Great post!
